Love In The Time of Notes

Valentine’s day invariably evokes a melting pot of emotions in people. The written word is a forgotten art perhaps, but we may use the power of the written word many times in our daily lives without even realizing it! The Canadian stationary store called Take Note utilized this insight and partnered with BBDO Toronto to create a beautiful short film called ‘Notes – a life story, a love story’. Though the campaign is three years old, the emotions are still fresh and alive. The 4-minute film takes you through the life of a couple who express the intensity of their emotions through written short notes. Dating, marriage, children, relationship crisis, reconciliation and ultimately the end of a journey – the ad carries you through all the emotional hills and valleys that a typical couple in love go through. I love the ad because it the story transcends all ages and resonates with the basic need of a every human – to be heard, loved and acknowledged. The story starts with two young people who meet, fall in love and pursue a relationship. They express their love through written words and keep in touch through personalized handwritten notes. Once the rose-tinted glasses of young love come off, the couple begins to run into troubled moments, possibly aggravated by stress and inadequate communication. The sentences become shorter and the emotions run dry. The film progresses to show the couple making an effort to reconnect through various means, all the while still trying to keep in touch through the written notes. Ultimately, this pays off and the couple seem to be able to rekindle the fire that ignited their marriage.

An array of emotions are captured through notes and clever background messaging.

The film hits a solid home run by reemphasizing the most important part of a successful family relationship – consistent and effective communication! It subtly and clever gives glimpses of the results of better communication through subtle background props and actions.

The brand name and products are cleverly made characters of the story.

What better message for a stationary shop to give its customers? Expressing love is a big part of being successful in a relationship and the film brought a perfect culmination to the festivities of Valentine’s Day.
